Recently I relearned how often people place their own tone on God's teachings. For example Psalm 46, verse 10 reads: Be still and know that I am God.
I was surprised that a person who spent lots of time in God's word, found this to be an angry command by God insisting that in a busy world people learn how to stop and sit still, but how recently when they read it, it struck them as more of an invite.
I found it a little strange that both of us had been drawn to that passage in recent days, as in the world we do find ourselves with lots of time in which one can be still and how differently we had both heard this in our heads until their recent transition of understanding.
As I pondered the way in which this person had 'heard' this verse for years, I reflected on the ways in which one can misunderstand a text message and honestly, the way we hear written words all falls to the tone in which we hear them. I think the way in which you hear tones when reading has to do with your 'life set'; meaning the place in which you start, the emotional place, your heart. As this thought struck me, I heard:
for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. (from Luke 6:45)

I think from that same abundance the ear enforces tone. When you think about it that may be why so many of us don't always get the same message when we read the word of God and why for some they gain nothing. It is my belief that in truth, they don't want to get anything and God loves to give his children the desires of their heart. We have seen again and again how he will allow us to go down the path of darkness should it truly be what we desire.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, (Romans 1:28, NASB).
And the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses.(Exodus 9:12, NASB)
when I first read this passage in Exodus years ago, my heart was sad not understanding why God would harden a person's heart. It is not something in fact that God did more rather, it was something he allowed to take place.
It is as if God sees the heart and knows we will be hell bent come what may and he releases us to ourselves, completely removing the brakes. This is just a feeling though; honestly I don't know the answer, I only know that when I don't get something and it seems to go against who I do know God to be, that I should pray for understanding in that area.
At the end of the day things I am 100% certain of are that God is good, true and faithful. That is what he wants me to remember in and through all things. It is what he is reminding me of when he invites me to be still and KNOW that He is God. I am blessed to KNOW just that! It took me a long time to no longer believe the lie of the enemy; lies such as ones regarding God's thoughts about me specifically. Only when you seek God, do you learn such truths.
I pray this has made sense to all who read. Life at home under lockdown with 7 children leaves little time for one to bask and share in the thoughts and understandings of all God shares with me.
Until I have a free moment again, be smart, be safe, be blessed and in turn be a blessing to others!
Love,
Wendy, mom of many, girl who walks with God!
